The Einbürgerungstest canton by canton: what each of the 26 asks

Switzerland has no national citizenship test. Each canton decides how to check your knowledge, from a 50-question digital test in Zurich to the informal interviews Fribourg chose instead of exams.

How to read this page

Every entry is from the canton's own website, ordinance or leaflet, read on 1 October 2026. Where a canton does not publish a figure, the entry says so. Where a fact comes from a commune or from a school working for the canton rather than from the canton itself, the entry says that too.

The canton that counts is the one where you apply, and inside it often your commune: many cantons leave the knowledge check, or part of it, to the commune. The commune where you live can tell you which test or interview applies to you.

Cantons with their own test (11)

These cantons require a test, a course exam or an oral exam that you must pass, set or run under cantonal rules.

Cantons that ask in an interview (5)

These cantons have no separate written test. Your knowledge is checked in an interview or hearing that the canton or its parliament holds.

Cantons where your commune decides (10)

These cantons publish no cantonal test. The commune or Bürgergemeinde checks your knowledge, in an interview and in some communes with a test of its own.

What Belong Switzerland covers, and what it does not

The app's 418 practice questions cover the four federal areas, geography, history, politics and society, in Swiss Standard German with an English study line. They are not any canton's official questions, and the app does not write the questions about your canton or your commune.

If your canton publishes its own questions, study those as well. If it tests in French or Italian, use its own material for the wording.

Questions about the cantonal tests

Is there one Einbürgerungstest for all of Switzerland?

No. Federal law says what you must know, basic knowledge of Swiss geography, history, politics and society, and lets the cantonal authority decide whether to test it (BüV article 2). There is no federal question catalogue and no national pass mark.

Which cantons publish their questions?

Zurich publishes all 350 questions of its Grundkenntnistest with answers and Aargau about 330 with answers. Vaud lets you practise all 160 on its A-Vaud-Test and Neuchâtel publishes every question its oral test can ask. Geneva publishes 141 study questions and Valais a list of possible questions, both with answers.

Do I take the test before or after I apply?

It depends on the canton. Bern, Aargau, Obwalden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden want it passed before you apply, Geneva depending on your situation, and Glarus asks for the course certificate with the application. In Zurich it depends on the commune, and in Vaud the commune holds it within six months of receiving your file.

Can I take it in English?

None of the cantonal pages we read offers it in English. Bern, for example, sets it in German or French, by the official language of your commune's district.

There are 418 practice questions in the app.

418 questions on geography, history, politics and society, drilled area by area in the order the Citizenship Ordinance sets them, with a mistakes deck and spaced repetition. There is no mock test, because there is no national paper to copy.

Written by Belong Switzerland around the four areas of BüV article 2. They are not any canton’s official questions, and the questions on your canton and your commune are not ours to write.
